Recycle Right

Deciding to recycle is just the first step; you also want to make sure the items are recycled correctly. Not all items that you THINK can be recycled actually can be deposited at the community drop-off locations or in your curbside containers. Please only place acceptable items in these containers--items not accepted contaminate the other items and may result in the need to dispose of the entire container in the landfill.

Rules for Drop-Off Recycling--are you recycling correctly? (click for details)

Seriously, if it is not SPECIFICALLY labeled on the container, it CANNOT be recycled at a Clinton County Drop-off site!

Don't be a drag--DUMP OUT YOUR BAG

All your co-mingled recyclables go to a sort center where they are separated out by type of material (aluminum cans, steel cans, paper fibers, glass...etc.). The sorting needs to happen so that the manufacturers, who make recycled-content products have a quality and reliable source of material. The machines and human personnel needed to accomplish this sorting are adversely impacted by the presence of plastic bags. Bags and other plastic films get tangled in the equipment causing damage and/or slowdowns which put the people who work on the machines at risk.

Plastic bags are recyclable, but not in co-mingled programs. Take them to your local grocery store or Lowes. There are different processes and handlers to recycle your bags and plastic film.

Composting

Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard waste together currently make up more than 28 percent of what we throw away and should be composted instead. Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

Composting is easy and can be fun. There are many resources online that can help you get started--click here for the EPAs tips for composting at home.

Having a special event and want to recycle beverage bottles?

Clinton County Solid Waste Management District loans out FREE bottle-shaped disposal containers designed to collect discarded empty bottles and cans. When the event is over, the container can be emptied into any Clinton County drop-off recycling location and returned to CCSWMD.

Litter—an ugly problem

Do you love your community? Want to show it? Conducting a clean-up of a local park, school campus, or bike trail is a great way to show your community pride. The Clinton County Solid Waste Management District would like to help.  The SWMD has free litter cleanup kits available to groups interested in helping to remove litter and other debris from public grounds in communities around Clinton County.  Each kit consists of bags, gloves, safety vests, and pick-up tools.  For more information or to schedule a time to use one of these kits, please contact the CCSWMD at 382-6177.

*Volunteers needed for Litter Clean-up Campaigns – Join the effort and help us tackle litter!

Litter prevention is a big concern not only in Clinton County but also throughout the State of Ohio.  Litter has negative effects on the environment, wildlife, and community morale. Moreover, is often a drain on public resources. If you suspect someone of littering or illegally dumping materials, please note the vehicle description and license plate number and immediately contact local law enforcement.
