Message from the Director.......

I thought that I might take a little time to fill you in on what is happening at the Nike Center Adult Day Program as we move into 2010.

First we will take a look at our vocational programs. Like many businesses in Clinton County 2009 has been a difficult year for Orion, Inc.  Our 2009 sub-contract revenue was 58.8% below our projected budget. This includes our enclave work at Timber Tech. That means that the amount of work available to our adult customers has been substantially less than in previous years. The work that is available is shared by our employees as fairly as can be arranged while keeping in mind the needs and demands of our customers. We are working very hard to find new job opportunities for those we serve, including attempts to start new business ventures. We are confident that the work opportunities will return but we have no guarantees for the near future.

The good news is that our non-vocational options are greater than ever! We have spent a lot of time and money to provide more recreational opportunities for the individuals that we serve and the positive results are clearly visible. An example of the activities that have occurred in the past two days alone include: Community Outings (we try to get people into the community as often as possible), computer activities (games and internet), board games (Sorry, Operation, Monopoly, Trouble, etc..), Wii video games (sports, Guitar Hero, Dancing With the Stars, etc…), art projects, use of our extensive exercise equipment, arts & crafts projects, karaoke, musical instrument playing/experimenting, table tennis, billiards (we just purchased a new full size billiard/table tennis combination table) and sensory room activities. For those who prefer more passive goings-on we also offer opportunities to listen to music, work jigsaw puzzles, reading time, or watching a favorite movie or TV show, such as “The Price Is Right”. These are just some examples and we are regularly reviewing the non-voc program to introduce new activities and keep the others fresh and enjoyable. Our current Non-Voc Review Committee is discussing some new and exciting ideas.

It is our goal to provide a fulfilling, well rounded experience for our customers attending our day program. If you have any questions, suggestions or comments please feel free to contact me at 937-382-6674 or at dross@nikecenter.org.  We also encourage family, providers and other stakeholders to stop by and visit. We look forward to hearing from you.
